Crane Inspection and Crane Maintenance

Overhead Crane Requirements
Because of the size and weight of the goods they constantly lift and move overhead, overhead cranes require routine inspections to ensure continuing safe functioning. Before a crane may be utilized, it must pass an initial examination, whether it is new or modified.
Once overhead cranes are operational, they must undergo two types of inspections:
- Inspections are conducted on a daily to monthly basis.
- Periodic checks are performed 1–12 times each year.
These inspections are designed to look at the crane's most important components. This aids in determining the level of the crane's component malfunction, degradation, or wear and tear.
Items that Need Inspection and Their Frequency
The following items require daily inspection:
- Functional operating mechanisms: These systems must be examined for problems.
- Components of the hydraulic and air systems:Check for degradation or deficiencies in valves, lines, tanks, drain pumps, and other components.
- Crane hooks:Cracks and distortion must be examined.
Several features also necessitate periodic inspections or other actions:
- End and rope connections: Every month, these must be checked for broken strands or wear.
- End connections and hoist chains: Check for distortion, twitching, excessive wear, or anything else that could interfere with their correct performance or cause them to extend beyond the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Written documents:With each inspection that is completed, all records must be thoroughly updated.
Other inspections are carried out as required. Regularly inspect functional operational mechanisms for excessive wear. Depending on how often your crane system is used, this could be daily or monthly. Inspections of rope reeving should be done as needed or as indicated by the manufacturer.
Design Requirements
OSHA mandates a number of design standards for the crane's cab and controls. The lighting, footwalks, ladders, and stairways in the cab are all governed by OSHA rules. The following components are also covered by OSHA recommendations:
- Bumpers for bridges and trolleys
- Hoist, holding, trolley, and bridge brakes
- Electrical components
- Hoisting equipment
- Warning devices
Maintenance Requirements
According to the crane manufacturer's instructions, you must execute a preventative maintenance schedule. You must execute repair before you may operate the crane again if you discover any dangerous conditions or degraded components during the required inspections.
Only authorized employees are permitted to perform repairs and maintenance. To de-energize the crane, follow the instructions in 29 CFR 1910.147, Control of Hazardous Energy or Tagout/Lockout.
