Scrap charging cranes are heavy-duty crane which are typically used in the steel mills to charge steel scrap and metal scrap into furnaces. Besides, the charging cranes also can be used to handle molten metal. In this case, safety is one of the most important factor for scrap charging crane design, production and operation. Usually, the charging overhead crane is made up of a Double Girder or double beam crane with a main hoist and an auxiliary hoist, which not only can be used for scrap charging but also for maintenance and slag removal. For large scale steel mill plant, four girder charging cranes are used to ensure productivity and safety.
Because the ambient temperature is usually high due to heat emitted from the furnace, a heat shield against the flames is considered, and the steel mill charging crane is designed to operate in high temperatures.
