A slab and billet crane is a highly maneuverable electric overhead crane or bridge crane that transports large and heavy pieces of slabs and billets, a types of hot and soft metal, from the melt shop to their next procedures. Because the melt shop is so dangerous, it is usually located some distance away from the other production site or workshops. The slab and billet crane with special designed clamps feeds slabs and billets into shaping rollers, transports the metal to be reheated in another furnace before shaping, transports the shaped steel to another conveyor for further processing, or transport it to a storage area.

A slab is a rectangular-cross-section length of metal. The slab is formed either directly through continuous casting or indirectly through rolling an ingot on a slabbing mill. Slabs are typically processed further through flat rolling, skelping, and pipe rolling. Sheet metal, plates, strip metal, pipes, and tubes are common end products.
